Incivility is one of the biggest causes of problems in workplace relationships. Incivility is inappropriate behaviour such as rudeness, sarcasm and belittling or excluding people. This can be spoken or written.
Build a culture of respect – respect for each other, respect for effort, respect for difference, respectful conversation and interactions. Having a cohesive workplace is good business and simply good manners.
Develop policies and procedures that set standards for workplace behaviour and interactions, and encourage participation.
These should define expectations for professional interactions and communication between co-workers (and between management and staff), and for personal interactions and communication.
“We’re all in this thing called ‘Life’ together – all fellow travellers on the same journey. And we all, from time to time, have our struggles. The very least we can do is look out for each other; to share a few kind words when a kind word is called for, and to extend a hand when a hand is needed”
